3D casting is the ultimate keepsake. Unlike plaster which gives a raised print (2D+), 3D casting captures baby's entire hand in full volume — every line, every crease, every tiny fingernail. The result looks like a museum sculpture.
It's the most moving technique, but also the most technical. This guide walks you through everything.
Plaster vs 3D Casting — what's the difference?
| Classic plaster | 3D Casting | |
|---|---|---|
| Technique | Easy | Intermediate |
| Result | 2D+ (imprint) | Full 3D (sculpture) |
| Time | 20 min + 48h drying | 45 min + 24h drying |
| Budget | ~€10–15 | ~€25–40 |
| Best age | 0–6 months | 0–3 months |
What you'll need
- LifeCast 3D casting kit{target="_blank" rel="noopener"} (alginate + white plaster included)
- Large container (at least 2L)
- Lukewarm water (important: not cold, not hot)
- Clean cloth
How alginate works
Alginate is a natural powder (derived from seaweed) that, when mixed with water, forms a soft gel in 2–3 minutes. You dip baby's hand into this gel, wait for it to set, gently remove — and you have a perfect mold of the entire hand.
Then you pour plaster into this mold. After drying, you remove the alginate (which peels off in one piece) and reveal the sculpture.
Detailed steps
1. Prepare the alginate Pour alginate powder into the container. Add lukewarm water according to the kit's proportions (usually 1:1 by volume). Mix quickly for 30 seconds — alginate sets fast.
2. Dip baby's hand Immediately after mixing, dip baby's hand into the alginate up to the wrist. Hold it still, fingers slightly spread. Hold for 2–3 minutes until the gel is firm.
3. Remove gently Ask baby to open their hand (or help gently). Remove the hand with a slight rotating motion. The alginate mold keeps the perfect shape of the hand.
4. Pour the plaster Prepare the white plaster (included) to a liquid consistency. Pour into the alginate mold. Let set 20 minutes.
5. Demold Alginate peels away easily by tearing gently. Reveal the sculpture. Let dry 24 full hours before handling.
Painting and finishing
The raw white sculpture is already beautiful. To go further:
- Bronze patina: metallic gold/bronze paint applied in a thin layer
- Lacquered white: gloss varnish for a porcelain finish
- Natural tinted: light watercolor wash that lets the plaster show through
Essential tip
Alginate sets in 2–3 minutes — there's no room for error in the proportions. Weigh ingredients precisely, prepare everything in advance, and read the instructions fully before starting.
Ideal with a second adult: one manages baby, one manages the mix.
