The safety of a DIY pacifier clip depends entirely on the materials chosen. Here's what you need to know before you start.

The standard governing pacifier clips: EN 1400

In Europe, commercial pacifier clips must comply with EN 1400. For handmade production, this standard isn't mandatory — but its principles remain the only available safety guidelines:

  • Maximum finished length: 22 cm
  • No small detachable parts (choking hazard)
  • Tensile strength: clip and ring must withstand 90N of force
  • Non-toxic, BPA-free materials

ALLOWED materials ✓

Food-grade silicone beads The #1 choice. Non-toxic, BPA-free, phthalate-free. Certified for food contact (safe for mouths). Look for "food-grade silicone" certification on the packaging.

Silicone cord Flexible, durable, washable. Doesn't cut or fray like cotton.

Resistant nylon cord Alternative to silicone. Good tensile strength. Seal knots with a flame to prevent loosening.

BPA-free clothing clips Identified by the "BPA-free" logo on packaging. Prefer clips certified for baby accessories.

Untreated beechwood beads Acceptable if unpainted, unvarnished, and certified as baby toys (EN 71 standard).

PROHIBITED materials ✗

Hard plastic beads Break and create sharp fragments. Choking hazard.

Glass beads Shatter. Sharp fragments. Absolutely prohibited.

Elastic thread Stretches with use, creates variable lengths. Strangulation risk if length exceeds 22 cm.

Uncertified beads Beads without certification (bought in bulk without labeling) may contain toxic dyes or lead.

Office or kitchen clips Not designed for baby tensile force. Break or open unexpectedly.

Where to buy certified materials

The baby-certified materials kit{target="_blank" rel="noopener"} contains only compliant materials: food-grade silicone beads, silicone cord, and BPA-free certified clips.

Inspection before each use

Before giving the pacifier clip to baby, check:

  • Cord integrity (no fraying, no loose knots)
  • Clip solidity (should not open easily)
  • No cracked or detached beads
  • Total length (always ≤ 22 cm)
