A mobile above baby's crib is one of the first visual stimuli of their life. It teaches eye tracking, develops depth perception, and creates a gentle atmosphere in the nursery. Here are 5 DIY ideas.

What to know before you start

  • The mobile should be 30–40 cm above baby's face (not too high, not too low)
  • Use transparent fishing line for a "floating" effect
  • Attach to a solid ceiling suspension point (screw eyelet + anchor)
  • Use contrasting shapes (black, white, grey) for the first 3 months — baby can't clearly see colors yet

Idea 1: Geometric paper mobile

Materials: thick paper, geometric shape templates, fishing line, wooden stick

Cut triangles, diamonds, and circles from kraft paper and white paper. Hang on a wooden stick at 3 different heights.

Palette: black + white + light grey (ideal 0–3 months)

Idea 2: Felt cloud and star mobile

Materials: white + gold felt, polyester stuffing, cotton thread, wooden ring

Cut clouds and stars from felt. Lightly stuff each shape with stuffing. Hang on a wooden ring at varying heights.

Palette: white + gold + mint — luminous and soft

Idea 3: Feather and golden ball mobile

Materials: decorative feathers, painted polystyrene balls, copper wire, natural branch

Paint balls in gold, powder pink, white. Insert a feather into each ball. Hang on a natural branch for a boho look.

Palette: terracotta + beige + off-white — perfect for a natural nursery

Idea 4: Origami crane mobile

Materials: origami paper (15×15 cm), fishing line, stick

Fold 12 origami cranes in different coordinated papers. Hang at 3 different lengths. Each crane spins in air currents — a fascinating spectacle for baby.

Palette: pastel multicolor or single color for a minimalist look

Idea 5: Wool pompom mobile

Materials: yarn (3 colors), pompom fork, metal ring, fishing line

Make 12 pompoms in different sizes (large: 6cm, medium: 4cm, small: 2cm). Hang in clusters of 3 pompoms per thread, at alternating heights.

Palette: sage + aqua + white — echoes the petitestraces palette

Baby mobile safety

  • Remove the mobile as soon as baby can sit up independently (around 5–6 months) — risk of pulling it
  • Regularly check suspension thread integrity
  • No element should be able to fall into the crib
